In December 2019, both houses of Congress (the Senate and House of Representatives) passed and agreed to Resolution 150-116th Congress, a resolution expressing the sense of the Senate that it is the policy of the United States to commemorate the Armenian Genocide through official recognition and remembrance. Today, almost 18 months later, President Biden recognized the Turkish authorities’ atrocities against the Armenians between 1915 and 1923 as being a “Genocide.” President Biden’s recognition of the Armenian Genocide is the right step in the right direction. It puts the United States of America back on the right track of humanity, human rights, and democracy. Through President Biden’s recognition of the Armenian Genocide, it is evident that America is back as the world’s beacon of human rights and democracy and is back on to its values, ideals, and support for justice and accountability to the victims of the Genocide and whoever suffered from such heinous international crimes as defined by article 6 of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.
On my behalf and of the Armenian community in Lebanon and as a third-generation Armenian Genocide survivor, I express my sincere gratitude to President Biden, his administration, and the American people for doing the right thing for humanity and recognizing the Armenian Genocide.
